Surviving Academia

...characteristically sharp and well-reasoned

Name:
Melissa
Schools:
I'm Melissa, a 27-year-old black American dork.

Here are my interests:

-reading - anything. Mostly I'm into historical fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, medical nonfiction, and other kinds of fiction works that are sort of broadly undefined. I also enjoy fluffy YA from time to time. It's like candy.
-playing video games
-watching anime (always open to recommendations)
-watching TV, mostly on Hulu & Netflix
-writing fanfiction (well...sort of...I don't have the time as much)
-shopping. Mostly I love makeup and electronic gadgets.
-working out, although I've been slacking lately.

Most of The last 6 years of my life has been spent in a PhD program in sociomedical sciences (public health) and psychology. I want to enter a research career in public health, either working for a government agency, think tank, or university as a researcher. My research interests are at the nexus of racial identity, HIV, substance use, and mental health/stress. I'm interested in how stress - general daily stress, as well as stress related to prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping - affects the mental health, substance use, and HIV risk and management management/progression of African Americans. I'm also interested in their utilization of the health care system, particularly their interactions with health care providers and how that affects their health.

I've decided to make my journal friends only by default. If you want to be added, comment please!
